November 10 - Allen Edwards, Ken Fry, Donna Mills
Allen Edwards (www.AllenEdwards.com)
Internationally renowned hairstylist and entrepreneur, Allen Edwards, continues his focus on constantly creating new and exciting hair styles, training fellow stylists, and developing products that raise the standard in the beauty industry. With over thirty years of styling some of the world's most recognizable celebrities, Allen Edwards and his team of professionals have truly placed their mark as innovative talents and trendsetters.
After taking over the successful Los Angeles based Jon Peters' salons in the 70s, Edwards quickly revamped not just the name, but the image as well. With the changes, Edwards created one of the first extensive training programs for up-and-coming hair stylists, which often required one to two years working as an assistant stylist before branching out. The training program, which is still in effect today has become highly competitive and ensures that the Allen Edwards' Salons attract and retain the very best. It was also at this time that Edwards created Farrah Fawcett's signature layered look. The “Farrah" and its subsequent adaptations remain one of the most popular and copied hair styles to date.
With success, Edwards quickly became one of the most sought after celebrity stylists and spokesperson for such companies as Clairol, KMS, Sun Silk, and Aveda. Having worked with Hollywood's finest over the years it is no wonder that celebrities such as Julianne Moore, Vanessa Minnillo, Renee Zellweger, Laura Flynn Boyle, Leah Remini, Donna Mills, Raquel Welch and many others have sought the expertise of Edwards and his team to always keep them looking their best. Edwards' large celebrity clientele has paved the way for television appearances on Oprah, E!, Style Network, and Regis & Kathy Lee to name a few. With well over 1,000 appearances, Edwards continues working with many of the leading makeover and reality shows lending his talent and ability to help others look their best.
Never one to rest and with the charisma of an entertainer, Edwards is credited with producing the first “rock" hair show, which incorporates the concept of a rock concert and utilizes lighting, music and other theatrical effects while presenting the latest techniques in styling. Often attended by thousands of stylists and industry experts, Edwards has presented some of his signature techniques such as scrunching, blow curls, cutting with tapering scissors / razors, and many more advanced methods that he has developed.
Always staying on the forefront of the beauty industry and realizing the importance in today's busy world to take time out to relax and rejuvenate, the Allen Edwards Salons were one of the first establishments to add spa treatments such as facials, massages, and body treatments at their locations. The Allen Edwards Salon & Spa as it is now known, has grown to two sizable locations and is frequented by women and men who know they will receive the highest levels of service by trained professionals. According to Edwards, “No matter what's going on in your life, looking good can always help your self-image. When a client says that they love the way they look and feel, I know my team and I have done our job. This has always been my goal."
Along with his business partner and wife, Lisa Edwards, Allen Edwards continues to oversee the direction of style development and training. When not at the salons and spas, Edwards and his wife are avid health enthusiasts and animal lovers. With his newly released memoir SHEAR FORCE chronicling his life and career and regular television appearances, it is no wonder Edwards is a constant source of creative energy.
The Allen Edwards Salons + Spas are located in Brentwood and Woodland Hills CA. www.allenedwards.com.
Ken Fry (www.OurVeteransOurHeroes.com)
Three years ago Ken came out of a 6-day coma to the news that he had endocarditis (an infection of the interior of the heart), was suffering from liver and kidney failure, had had multiple brain bleeds and, without emergency valve replacement surgery, had fewer than 5 days to live. Just prior to surgery, he suffered a stroke and lost half the vision in his right eye.
Undeterred, his surgeon pushed forward with open heart surgery and saved his life. Eighteen months of painful recovery marred by post traumatic stress syndrome and crushing depression followed.
The near-death experience certainly changed him and he ultimately walked away from a 30 year business career to pursue something more meaningful. Watching the news day in and day out, he stopped feeling sorry for himself and began focusing his attention elsewhere.
He founded the Our Veterans, Our Heroes organization to focus on what really mattered...helping those who need and warrant our help the most...our nation's veterans...our real heroes.
The organization was founded to directly address the challenges and needs of our military personnel and their families---from the devastation of healthcare issues to the heartbreak of home foreclosures.
Donna Mills, Actor
Donna's career has encompassed the stage, television, and film. She has created a best-selling beauty video and a line of beauty products. She also produces and stars in her own made-for-TV movie projects.
Donna Mills was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. Her father was an oil executive and her mother was a dance instructor. Donna studied cal ballet throughout her teens. After spending a year studying drama at the University of Illinois, she made my way to New York, where she landed an understudy role in Woody Allen's first play, Don't Drink the Water.
Donna supported herself by appearing on the daytime dramas The Secret Storm and Love Is a Many Splendored Thing. Her first primetime break came with the sitcom The Good Life, with Larry Hagman, and appearances in the feature films The Incident and Clint Eastwood's Play Misty for Me.
Donna found her greatest recognition in her portrayal of conniving Abby Cunningham on Knot's Landing. She began to direct episodes of the series and continues to develop, produce and star in a number of television movies highlighting important social issues such as deadbeat dads, domestic violence, and alcoholism.
Donna has long been a supporter of various political and human rights causes -- Easter Seals, Women in Film, and ECO (Earth Communications Office), among others -- but she feels her greatest achievement has been my relationship with my daughter, Chloe, who she adopted in 1995. These days she divides her time between work and motherhood.
